Calcium Chloride Liquor 34- 36% is manufactured by neutralising Hydrochloric Acid with Calcium Carbonate. Similar to the Calcium Nitrate Liquor process, the mixture when fully reacted and reached a neutral stage, will start to settle down naturally where the undissolved materials i.e. sludge will settle to the bottom leaving the clear and colourless product above the sludge i.e. Calcium Chloride Liquor. Because of the purity of the raw material, Hydrochloric Acid which conforms to RoHS requirements, the product is of premium grade. However, there is also a product of lower grade, with the appearance from cloudy to clear, and is suitable for water treatment application.
In some countries, Calcium Chloride Liquor is used in rubber glove process instead of Calcium Nitrate Liquor since Calcium (Ca2+) is the active ingredient in latex coagulation. The Calcium contents in Calcium Chloride Liquor, is comparable to, if not more than, Calcium Nitrate Liquor though both are at different concentrations. However, it is corrosive to stainless steel since it is Chloride based.
Calcium Chloride Liquor is a versatile product. In the food industry it is used as a processing aid, a mineral balance in potable & beer brewing water (Burtonising), & a freezing aid, because of its low freezing point, in ice cream/ ice manufacturing.
For effluent treatment it is used as a precipitant for the removal of fluorides, sulphates, & phosphates, as well as an oil emulsion breaker. For construction industry, it is used as an accelerator in hardening during manufacturing of roof tiles (cement base). In dusty environment, it is the most effective material to be used to control dust. For deep sea crude oil exploration, it is also used as cooling agent in the drilling process because of its high boiling point property.
The most recent study of its usages is to substitute Sodium Chloride, which is commonly used as table salt, as Calcium Chloride is much more salty when compared to Sodium Chloride. In this case, the amount of salt ingested into our digestion system can be reduced tremendously because excessive amount of Sodium in our body will cause certain damage to our kidney's.
